At Living Stones Restoration, we follow the standards set by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration (NCA) and the National Park Service (NPS) for the care and cleaning of government-furnished headstones and markers. These guidelines exist to protect the integrity of every veteran's memorial for generations to come.
Living Stones Restoration follows the "Do No Harm" principle established by the VA and NPS. We use only approved cleaning agents, soft natural-bristle brushes, and clean water. We never use power washers, wire brushes, bleach, acids, or abrasive materials on any headstone or marker — government-furnished or private.
The goal of cleaning is to remove air pollution soiling, lichen, bird droppings, dirt, salts, and biological growth. It is not to make a headstone look "like new." Over-cleaning can accelerate stone deterioration. Pre-1970 bronze markers were not sealed and will carry a natural blue-green patina that cleaning will not — and should not — remove.
The VA strictly prohibits the use of power washing on government-furnished headstones and markers. Also prohibited: wire brushes, metal scrapers, bleach, acids, household cleaners, and any abrasive materials. These methods cause irreversible damage to marble and granite surfaces and can erase inscriptions permanently.
The NPS and VA approve the use of D/2 Biological Solution applied with soft, natural-bristle brushes and rinsed with clean water. This method safely removes biological growth without harming the stone surface. Living Stones Restoration uses D/2 on every applicable project.
Always obtain permission from cemetery officials before performing any work on any headstone or marker. There is no "Good Samaritan" rule in preservation — work done without authorization, even well-intentioned, can violate federal and state regulations. Living Stones Restoration handles all permission requirements before any project begins.
All government-furnished headstones and markers remain the property of the United States Government in perpetuity. Under 38 CFR 1.218(b)(5), destruction, defacement, or removal of any monument within a national cemetery is prohibited with associated fines. Under 18 U.S.C. 1361, willful damage to government property carries fines or imprisonment.
A headstone is placed as a marker to identify a burial site, but it serves a deeper purpose — to honor the deceased. The NCA and NPS guidelines are built on the principle that each stone must be treated with dignity and care. At Living Stones Restoration, this is not just a regulation we follow — it is the foundation of everything we do.
Guidelines sourced from: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration (NCA), National Park Service National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT), Cemetery Conservators for United Standards, and 36 CFR Part 12 / 38 CFR Part 38. Living Stones Restoration, LLC is an independent private restoration business and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the VA or NPS.
Our name comes from 1 Peter 2:5 — a reminder that every stone we restore represents a life of eternal worth. We bring that reverence to every project.
We use only approved methods: D/2, Prosoco ReVive, soft brushes, and clean water. Never bleach, acid, wire brushes, or pressure washing.

My great-grandmother's headstone was covered in black and green growth — I could barely read her name. Living Stones completely transformed it. I cried when I saw the before and after photos. The care they put into their work is evident in every detail.
Our church cemetery had headstones from the 1800s that we thought were beyond saving. The Living Stones team was incredibly respectful and knowledgeable. The results exceeded every expectation we had. They treated our history as their own.
I was worried when I called — my dad's veteran marker had decades of staining. They explained exactly what they'd do, followed NCA guidelines, and delivered a photo report the same day. Outstanding service and genuine respect for veterans.
